History Novato is proud of its heritage. The City is made up of the Novato - Black Point- Ignacio areas, which are parts of five Mexican Land Grants dating from 1839 to 1845. Prominent names of grantees and landowners will be found on street names, including Fernando Feliz, Francis DeLong and Ignacio Pacheco. The first City Hall, originally the First Presbyterian Church built in 1896, is located on the corner of Sherman and DeLong Avenues. Items and pictures of Novato's history are on display in the City Hall and in the City's history museum. Novato is "on the move". Those who have made Novato their home have seen the building of offices and business establishments that are structurally innovative and esthetically appealing in style and design. For example, the utilities on Grant Avenue, the main street, have been put underground and new wooden light standards have been installed, all compatible to Novato's rural and historic background. Parks and Recreation When you are in Novato, you are just a stone's throw from a multitude of acres of state parks. 32.2% of the total land area in Marin is used for parks!
![]() Cultural Opportunities The resident of Novato with a thirst for culture need not venture far for satisfaction. Within the town of Novato we find the Novato Historical Museum. It is housed in one of the buildings which reach back to the 1800's. Here we find many photographs and drawings from the olden days. Just off Novato Boulevard we find the Marin Miwok Museum which contains photographs of Rock Art as well as Indian basketry, hand tools and petroglyphs from the Indians of Marin County, Nevada and Baja. In the summer, the City hosts a festival called Pioneer Days, which starts with a parade and ends with our own Rodeo. Indian Valley Colleges offers art shows, concerts, plays, forums and special events. The campus is nestled among rolling green foothills. The North Bay Artists gives performances periodically during the year. Novato is just fifteen minutes from the Marin Civic Center in San Rafael, where the beauty of the work of Frank Lloyd Wright lives on. Across the lagoon from the Civic Center is the Marin Veteran's Memorial where we can hear the music of the Marin Symphony or see the Marin Civic Ballet. It is also the site of the Marin County Fair.
